Re: 89' prelude build-up help
slhspride,
First, let me welcome you to PreludeDriver.com. We're glad you're here.
Let's first try to get your car sparking and go from there. First of all, is the engine turning over now when you run the starter? If the starter isn't working, let us know and we'll start there.
If you are turning over, but not getting any spark, check to make sure that you distributor is in functional condition. 89 preludes have a mechanical ignition system (ie they have a distributor) and so if the distributor isn't working, you won't get any spark. Check all your spark plug cables, including the one that comes from the coil. Check your fuses, and use plugs that you know work. If all seems fine, disconnect all your plug wires from the engine. Take a plug that you know is good and place it in the end of one of the plug wires. Touch the threads of the spark plug to something metal in your engine, such as the valve cover, and have someone run the starter for you. You should be able to see a spark in the plug as this is done. Make sure you keep the other plugs in the engine while you do this so that no gas vapors come out where you are making the spark. This is a simple way to visibly test if you are in fact getting spark. Let us know how it works out for you.
