whine from p/s pump and leaking fluid?

Post by jl5184 »

Hi all.My name is Jeffrey and I'm a recent 91 prelude Si owner.I paid 1900.00 for the prelude with a clean title.Body is in great shape as well as the interior(almost perfect). The guy that sold it to me said the power steering pump needed to be changed. Was wondering if it could be the seal inside the pump and if there was any way to tell? Also anti-lock brake light and check engine light are comming on after 8-10 minutes of driving? The car runs strong and does not get hot,so I'm hoping it's something little.Any info in these areas would be great. Thanks!!!

If your power steering pump is making a whining sound, it probably needs to be replaced. If it was just a seal, you'd have power steering fluid being sprayed inside your engine bay, but no noticeable whine. Even still, you may find the following article I wrote helpful:

Replacing the power steering pump all together isn't that hard, so if you do have to replace it, you can do it yourself with a few wrenches. Read the article above for information on how to loosen the belt tension and take the pulley off.

Your anti-lock brake light is likely coming on do to a bad wheel sensor. These go bad all the time and easily get fouled up by dirt and grime. Your wheel sensors are bolted to the hub assembly of each wheel. If you pop your wheel off and follow the only eletrical wire that runs near the brake line, you'll find the sensor. By removing the dust cover, you can clean them up and see if things improve at all. Often they merit replacement. I'm going to predict that you also feel the car's brakes shudder slightly as it rolls to a stop? You cna try to feel for this shudder when you drive to determine which wheel is having trouble. Try cleaning the sensors, and check the ABS fuse.
