'95 Prelude Balance Shaft 2.3 engine

Post by robert n »

I am doing a Timing Belt Replacement. Engine is at TDC and I removed the Balance Belt. The BALANCE GEAR ended up turning and I don't know the original reference point. One book I read says to Lock the Balance Shaft before removing the belt by:

1. Remove the Cylinder Block Plug and insert a M6 X 100 mm bolt to lock the Balance Shaft from Turning.
2. Instructions also say the Balance Shaft can be rotated until the 100 mm enters for approx 2"

My problem: The Balance Shaft/Gear has been rotated a few times. I can rotate the Balance Gear/Shaft and the M6 X 100 mm bold enters in 4 different positions...Which position do I choose? I also see a POINTER/LINE on the Balance GEAR. The bolt can lock the Balance Shaft when the POINTER/LINE is approximately at the

2:00
12:00
8:00
5:00 positions.

FYI: I see where the OIL PUMp GEAR is lined up with the case.

Which way should that point when the engine is at TDC?

Take a look at page 6-69 in the 1992 service manual (see our manuals section).

There, we read:

"Align the groove on the front timing balancer belt driven pulley to the pointer on the oil pump body as shown".

and

"Align the rear timing balance belt driven pulley by inserting the special tool through the maintenance hole."
