shifting issue/clutch/transmission

Post by frankinchik »

We have owned a 91 Honda Prelude si for several years. Recently, the car has become difficult to shift into other gears. When we first start the car it will sometimes not go into gear. We turn the car off and then back on and it then easily shifts into gear. At times when driving it will not shift down from 4th to 3rd when it normally should. I've looked in the online manual and did not see any info on this topic. Any help is appreciated....

Frank,

I assume that your car has a manual transmission?

Difficulty shifting often happens when the clutch isn't disengaging all the way. I would check the level of your clutch fluid, and bleed the clutch lines. If this doesn't help, you may need to look at the health of your clutch slave cylinder. These can wear out, and when they do they will leak and prevent proper clutch operation.
