90 Prelude - Battery does not charge

Hello Fellow Prelude Fans:

I own a 90 Si 4WS, completely stock. My battery does not receive the charge from the alternator. If I charge the battery manually, the car will run normally for a few hours, then I will gradually lose all the electricals. The battery light does not go on ( although it does work ). The battery, alternator & belt have been replaced. The battery is NOT being drained prematurely ( as with a short or a light on ), it simply does not get the charge from the alternator. It seems more like there is an 'open' preventing the battery from being charged. Has anyone seen this?

Also, is there an online source for the wiring diagram?

Thanks for your help,

LB

Hi LB,

Welcome to PreludeDriver. We're happy you're here.

If you're sure that you don't have a short, I would double check that your alternator is actually delivering the amount of volts it should. I realize that the Alternator is new, but that doesn't mean it is functioning correctly. I had it happen once where I bought an alternator, installed it, only to find out it would only push about 11 volts, which is not enough. On a good alternator, you should see 13+ volts or so when you multi-meter it. Be sure to test this.

Also, using a multimeter, check the positive lead on our alternator to make sure you have connectivity back to the battery terminals. Be sure to unhook the battery before doing this or you will get a bad shock. It's a big wire, and car batteries have plenty of amperage to surprise you with a painful shock.

As for wiring diagrams, the manuals in our Manuals (see link up top) section have wiring diagrams at the back. Download them and have a read.
