is it possible to convert a 2.0si (1990) into a 4ws (1990) if you have all the parts how difficult will it be. and would it work. because i just bought a 2.0si and my friend is selling his car for 400 bucks and it is the 4ws model. the reason why he is selling it is because it is a salvaged title and h has a blown head gasket. but he told me the steering still worked perfectly. so i was thinking of buying it and trying to do a conversion. so if you guys can help me make the decision. thanks very much. :?:

400 bucks is a good deal for the system.

If you have a donor car, it will be pretty easy to make the conversion. I'm doing this as well, although I had to pull all the parts from a wrecker.

The swap should be pretty easy. You'll have to start by pulling your exhaust and rear control arms off. The center control arm bracket by your gas tank will also have to come off as this gets replaced with the 4ws unit.

Pop your tie rods out of the front hubs, disconnect your power steering lines and drop your steering rack off. Replace it with the 4ws one.

Install the 4ws rear steering unit and bracket. I've heard this requires grinding a small cross member a bit underneath the car. I don't think you have to drop the gas tank to do it though.

Put the rear tie rods in place, bolt everything up, put exhaust back and you're more or less done.

Bottom line: not complicated, but time consuming. You'll have to mess with things a bit, but everything will fit.

but why?

handling, sure...

but won't the 4ws add a pretty significant amount of weight?

A bit.

But to drive a car that beat every other car through the slalom in a 1989 Road and Track test is likely worth the added weight.
