3rd Generation Prelude Engine Used in Racing - PICS!

Post by spiffyguido »

A lot of people make fun of the B20A series engines. Do these engines merit such abuse? Not a chance.

Some point and laugh at the B21A1 (technically a bored out B20A5) and say that it chews up cylinder rings. This is true, the B21A1 is hard on engine rings, but only because it has some special FRM (Fibre-Reinforced Metal) cylinder walls. The FRM developed by Honda is so biblically strong that some engine builders have reported seeing the factory cross-hatching in the cylinder walls past 200,000km. As long as the rings are kept in good condition, the B21A1 is a sweet engine filled with some of Honda's lastest tech of the day.

Others poke fun at the B20A5 for having #3 cylinder oiling problems at high rpm. True, it does. But why are these people running the engine up to 7000rpm in the first place.

The B20A series block is the basis for a lot of engines. Even Formula 3 race engines. When Mugen set out to develop a race engine for the formula 3 series in 1987, they looked to none other than the B20A block and head that so many people poke fun at. Those of us who run 3rd generation preludes can stand a little bit taller knowing that there is real potential hidden under the hoods of our cars. Mugen knew how to tune these engines properly, and they achieved peak power and torque below 5000rpm.

Say it isn't so? I'll let some pictures do the rest of the talking. How sweet would it be to have a Mugen MF-204 under the hood of your 3rd gen Prelude. Yes, you want one, but no, it's unlikely you'll ever have one. These engines still command top dollar when re-sold.
