Speedometer VSS code 17

Post by Phukaduck »

I Despize my VSS

Mostly because it's broken. Also because it's causing me distress about my mechanical talents. Never have i been so stumped by such a device.
It's been months since I first started to try and make my speedometer work. To this day it's still throwing code 17. I've tried new parts, new ground wires, new clips, new pins, and even an accord VSS.

She's running an H22A

She forgets what VTEC is. I read her your thread on "What is VTEC" every night before bed. But i think to her it's nothing more than a fairy tale anymore.

Does anyone have any suggestions on getting my Speed-o to rise off 0 km/h once again?

Interesting fact: My Cordless drill drives at 90 Km/h

This might sound stupid to some, the same way when it does when my friends call me and tell me to come get them because their car won't start and I ask them ALWAYS: "Is there gas in the car"........sometimes the obvious is overlooked.......

And besides, I can ask because you didn't specify that you had done this already, so, here's my question: Have you replaced the actual speedometer yet?

Have you checked the voltage output with a voltmeter by grounding the sensor connector and spinning one of the front wheels to see whether or not there is pulsing voltage being read coming from the sensor? If there is, then you need a new speedo.

My bet is the actual speedometer is the issue or you have an open circuit between the lead wire and the speed sensor.

Isn't it also true that the 4th generation (and 3rd and 5th gen for that matter) ludes have an amplifier on the speedo line? I believe the amplifier is attached to the back of the gauge cluster, but I'm not sure. I know I read an article a long time ago about one of these amplifiers going bad and causing the speedo to fail. Wish I knew where that article was now.

RedRacer. Do you have a diagram of the speedo cluster/wires/amp?

There may be an onboard amplifier, but I don't know for sure.

I think I have some basic diags somewhere.

Will look and post later tonight.

These are the only circuit diags I have.

So did you ever figure out the mystery with the speedometer? I am having the same problem as well and so far this is what I have done:

•Reset the ECU by pulling the 10A Clock Fuse – No change
•Swapped out speedometers - No change
•Checked number 23 fuse – OK.
•Tested for voltage between the black wire and the black/yellow wire on the VSS connector – getting 12 volts.
•Tested for voltage between the orange wire and the black wire on the VSS connector – getting 5 volts
•Tested for continuity between A4 on the speedometer cluster and to the VSS - passes.
•Tested for continuity between D9 on the TCM and the VSS – passes.
•Tested for continuity between B10 on the ECU and the VSS – passes.
•Jacked the car up, plugged the sensor into the VSS and tapped a volt reader on the orange wire while spinning one of the front wheels while the other front tire was blocked – voltage pulsates from 4.93 to around 5 volts. Since the Honda Manual states that it is supposed pulse from 0-12 volts I thought maybe I had a bad VSS – so I had 3 spare ones that I got from other prelude engines and swapped each of them out. Did the volt test again and the highest voltage I got was 6.23 volts – never goes up to 12 volts when spinning the front tire.
•Thought that maybe the VSS test was a fluke since what’s the possibility of having 3 bad VSS’s, so I hooked up a volt meter to A4 on the speedometer and spun the front wheel again – just sits at 4.93 volts and doesn’t move any. According to the Honda manual the voltage is supposed to pulsate however it sits at 4.93 volts.

Other odd things about the car:

•Radiator fans never turn on – even at idle they never turn on. However my temp gauge never moves past the middle point.
•Only throwing code 17 (VSS)
•D4 light light blinks 4 times when service connector is jumped
•Transmission shifts extremely hard – and makes a rattling noise (can feel it in the accelerator) when you go over 3k RPM in 3rd gear.

Well I finally got mine to work after a year without no speedo!
