92 h23 idle problems and wasting lots of gas

Post by jvilla »

Hey was needing some help fixing my 92 2.3l manual lude. I have had this problem for a while. Car starts fine and is responsive in all gears. Car idles really ruff and smells like it might be running rich. I cant find a vacuum leak anywhere and I have bled the coolant system to see if it helps. No luck. When I am driving the car is fine but once I put it into neutral the car dies 90 percent of the time. I can pop start it and it starts right back up. I have to keep my foot on the pedal most of the time to keep it from dying. I sometimes have trouble restarting it if I use the key. I also used a jumper to try and get the obd1 codes to see if I have any faults. No luck the check engine light just stays on and does not flash anything. Anyone out therr have any suggestions need the help thanks.

Have you tried using this procedure to get the fault code from the ECU?:

Yes, I have follow that to the tee. Once I jumper it, all that happens is that my check engine stays on and does not flash any codes.

Ok. Maybe as a second step then I'd suggest that you go through the steps outlined in the service manual (see manuals section above) to make sure that the idle is set correctly. If the ECU isn't throwing any error codes there must be a mechanical explanation.

Check your air filter as well. Make sure it's clean.

Just going with the obvious and simple at this point, I have to ask when was the car last tuned? Wires, plugs, cap, rotor button, fuel filter, etc? I had some rich problems, excessive fuel use and hard idles and I threw a major tune with Honda wires and caps and rotor button, NGK plugs, new fuel filter and stopped using crappy cheap fuel and everything cleared up.

This is just a stepping off point, not saying you're stupid and wouldn't have already considered this option -- just asking, because sometimes the simplest fix idea is surprisingly the one that works.

Although this does sound like an engine management issue to me - fuel to air, fuel flow, etc.

Look at the electronics/ignition system first and then move up to engine management as Spiffy said - get on with the manual and look at idle settings, mixture, pressure, etc.

Come back and let us know what you find, if anything.

Ok I replaced the fuel injectors, fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, control module. The car idles a bit better when it wants to but it still dies when I for instance put the csr into neutral getting off the freeway. Also it seems to be wasting more gas now which is weird I thought with new injectors it would solve the problem. Any more advice. Also I dont get as much mpg as I use to. Its about half less then I use to get. Some forums say the catalytic convertor.

Could be the catalytic converter. Is this a high mileage vehicle? Or has it done lots of hard driving?
