Life in the Alberta Deep Freeze

Post by spiffyguido »

Just wanted to shout out to anyone else who is hunkered down in the cold front that has been punishing Alberta, BC and the North Western US for the last week.

It's -30C in my home city right now. Colder if you count the windchill. That's -20F for our American friends.

I've lived in the area my whole life, but time never takes the bite off the first couple weeks of real winter. The mercury doesn't typically plunge so deep this early in the winter. If things don't improve, April is going to feel a very long way away.

For all of you in the Southern US and other warm places: Be glad you can go outside in a T-shirt....it's something I'm starting to miss.

Stay warm everyone!

Another tidbit.

Turns out I'm in the second coldest place on Earth today: http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Calga ... story.html

How nice.

-20 degrees?

Dude, where you live is now officially ridonkulous...! Not ridiculous, but ridonkulous!

I'm a big fan of winter and cold temps, but that's just TOO cold. I'll take my tornadoes and 110 degree heat any day! LOL

However, don't be so quick to think it's warm here right now. Our lows have been around 19 and 20 every morning for the past week and our highs have only been in the 30's. For us, that is very cold and for a long time.

Starting to warm back up though. Highs in the 40-50 range and lows in the 30's. We'll see the deeper cold again come January and February. And hopefully we'll get more snow this year!

Ya know what though -- I did go out yesterday without a jacket and I did only have on a short sleeve shirt over a t-shirt.
It was cold, but nothing unbearable. Now with the wind and the temps, if something had happened and the car broke down or I got locked outside or something, then yeah, not fun. And I don't think AAA car service will bring me a jacket if I call for one.

30F hey?.....I'll still trade with you.

It's since warmed up a bit here, but we're still far below freezing. Forecast for next week is nice. Time to bust out the skis. The mountains are sure to be buried in snow.

Yep! That's what I am looking forward to as well! Hitting the slopes. Plans to head to Colorado sometime in January.

We're getting hit pretty hard here right now as far as cold. It snowed all day yesterday, howling wind, bitter wind chills.

Tonight we're down to 19 and Monday night down to 14.

That's pretty dang cold for us. Even I admit that. That's COLD.

Why am I posting at 3:30 in the morning? My roommate just woke me up because he woke up to go pee and while looking out his bathroom window he thought he saw what looked like someone with a flashlight walking around on the back of the property....... Got up and lit up the house with all the exterior lights, got my gun and the dog and went out on the back deck barefoot, in my shorts and a tee shirt, looking for intruders.... nothing there. SHEESH..... Talk about FREAKIN COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!! Won't be doing THAT again anytime soon!

Still not sure what he saw. I think it was the security light on the house back behind us and he was seeing it through the tree limbs moving in the wind. He says no. Well, if there was anyone out there, the lights and my presence must have scared them off.

I just don't think anybody up to no good would be doing it with an obvious flashlight, nor would they be doing it in sub-freezing weather.
