Enjoyed an Awesome Concert Last Night

Hey everyone,

I don't know about most of you, but I am a huge music fan, and one of my favorite things is to go to a concert. Why do I bring it up now? Well, because I went to a really awesome show last night.

I've seen lots of big bands perform. U2, Metallica, Green Day (twice), Foo Fighters (more times than I can count), Collective Soul, Hole, Our Lady Peace, Smashing Pumpkins, and many more. All of these acts pale in comparison to what I saw last night. For the first time I took in a show where the band actually looked like they were having the time of their life on the stage. Maybe it was just a good night for them, but I have a hunch they are like this everywhere.

The band was called Nightwish. They're a melodic heavy metal band from Finland that isn't very well known in North America. Looking at the music industry, I really get the feeling that the Europeans are miles ahead of us. No offense to anyone here, but I've never really understood the hip/hop movement, nor have I embraced much of the other stuff that has come from this side of the big pond in the last 10 years.

I guess what I really want to say is that if you haven't already, go and check out some new acts. I was astounded by the talent Nightwish displayed last night, and almost embarrassed that even with such an excellent show to offer, they could only draw a (sold out) crowd of about 300. Sad.

I've been listening to European melodic metal for a while now, and it's been nothing but excellent. Check it out, and if any of these seemingly obscure bands (even though they're huge in Europe) happen to have a show in your area, go to it, you won't be disappointed and the tickets are inexpensive.

A few groups to check out: Nightwish, In Flames, Within Temptation, Sonata Arctica.

Wondering what this type of music is all about? A few samples of melodic heavy metal (also called Power Metal sometimes):
