I Joined a Race Team

Post by spiffyguido »

I just gotta share:

I've joined a Formula SAE Design team, and I'm really excited about it. We've already taken the car out for testing once and we've got a full calendar of work lined up for this fall. It's going to be awesome.

The Formula SAE series is participated in by hundreds of universities, and I'm on the team for my local U. The team is great, and the car is stellar.

It's a small open wheeled racer powered by a (governed to 77 hp) CBR 600 engine. I was so happy when I learned that it was Honda Powered.

0-60 in 3.5, and it's so loud you could probably hear it a mile away. We raced it at an army base two weekends ago, and I came home smelling like gasoline and race rubber.

We're competing next summer in Virginia. Teams come from all over the world. Last year there was apparently a team from Italy at the California SPeedway event that was powered by a Ducati engine and had a CF Mono Chassis.

Bliss!

SWEET! Dude, that is like a dream come true for you!
Very cool. A friend of mine was involved with the FSAE prog at Auburn. He had a great time with that.

Would love to burn a lap or two in that bad boy!

What is your place on the team?

I'm part of a 6 person group in charge of Suspension and Chassis. It's a lot of fun, and yes, it is a dream come true.

When we were out racing two weekends ago the car would pull into a our 'pit' and we would all swarm the car, checking the engine, tire temps, brake temps, pressures, fuel, everything. It was just like F1, only smaller.
